Our history

Since 1771

Worthing's oldest cricket club, and one of the oldest in Sussex, still playing on the green where it began.

Broadwater was a village in its own right long before Worthing grew into a town around it. Cricket on its green predates the club itself, and the story of the club is in many ways the story of the town's sport.

  1. 1720s

    Cricket on the green

The first recorded sport anywhere in what is now Worthing is cricket on Broadwater Green, in the 1720s. At the time Broadwater was the parish village; Worthing was a small fishing hamlet within it.

  2. 1771

    The club is founded

Broadwater Cricket Club is formed and plays its first match the same year, making it the first cricket club founded in the modern borough of Worthing. The year sits at the top of our crest.

  3. 1880s

    Broadwater and Worthing

As Worthing grew, the club became the Broadwater and Worthing Cricket Club, still based on Broadwater Green. Its members at the time were largely drawn from the area's gentry.

  4. 1895

    Two clubs

Around 1895 the club divided. The Worthing members left to form their own club, which became today's Worthing Cricket Club, while Broadwater stayed where it had always been: on the green.

  5. 1900s

    The twentieth century

Space for the club's own stories from the last century: notable players and captains, the war years, famous matches and characters from the clubhouse.

  6. 2016

    League champions

Broadwater were crowned West Sussex Invitation League champions, earning a place in the Sussex County League from the following season.

  7. Today

    Rebuilt from the roots up

Our volunteers have reignited the club over the last few years. We now field three Saturday sides in the Sussex Cricket League, a Sunday XI, a midweek T20 team and junior teams at Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15, and we look after the only public cricket net in Worthing.

Two hundred and fifty-five summers on the same patch of grass, and the club is going nowhere. Broadwater Cricket Club
